Getting closer!
Exactly 58 days from now, I'll be sitting with my dad and (I assume) a bunch of other 1st semester Ross students on a plane bound for St. Kitts. As my departure date approaches, everything is becoming so much more real. I got all of the medical nonsense out of the way and submitted most of my paperwork for my student visa. I've gotten 2 stethoscopes (thanks Dad!), a pediatric one for what I like to call "fake dogs" (i.e. most of what I worked with on Long Island) and a Littmann Master Classic II for everything else. I also got my housing assignment: Douglas Hall Room 208. The housing people must like me because I've been told my room is a corner room with a view of the Caribbean Sea! (Douglas is the building on the left in the picture below)
In addition to everything for vet school, I'm also on track to finish my masters this semester. I have my committee meeting next week and then, assuming the meeting went well, I'll schedule a defense date for early December. I'm a litte freaked out about the whole defense thing (I HATE public speaking) but I've been told it shouldn't be a stressful event and that nearly everyone is successful in their defense. I can't wait for grad school to be over.
And (yes, there's more) in the middle of completing one degree and getting everything together to start another, I've somehow managed to successfully get everyone together in one place for Thanksgiving. It doesn't sound like that big of a feat until you realize there are ~23 people from 3 different states to be coordinated. Who are these 23 people, you ask? Well, there is my immediate family (9, including me), my boyfriend, immediate and extended relatives from one side of his family (7-9 people), 1 of my brothers' best friends (who is basically like another brother to me) and 2 of the best couples I know (my best friend and her bf plus two of my closest friends from college). Luckily my mom is thrilled about having such a huge crowd this year. Seeing as it's my last Thanksgiving in the U.S. for a few years, I'm glad we can all get together and celebrate the holiday.
I'll try to update more frequently as December 31st approaches but in the meantime it's back to editing my thesis.

Hello!
I've decided to start a blog so that my friends and (mostly technologically inept) family can keep up with my life in vet school over the next 4 years.
Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies (map), about 200 miles ESE of the eastern shore of Puerto Rico. RUSVM students spend 7 semesters on the island completing the "pre-clinical curriculum"(i.e. anatomy, physiology, pathology, small and large animal medicine, etc.). Since there aren't traditional summer/winter breaks, these 7 semesters are completed in 2.33 years with ~2 week breaks between semesters. Then it's back to the US for a year of clinical training at one of 22 vet schools affiliated with Ross.
I fly to St. Kitts New Years Eve and start classes January 9, 2012, so expect more frequent updates as those dates draw closer.
Here's to completing my masters thesis in a timely manner, keeping up with this blog and starting vet school in January!
